The elevation in Everglades National Park ranges from 0 to 8 feet. There are several short interpretive trails. Fortunately, these are flat-which I love! One of these is the Everglades Anhinga Trail.
The Everglades Anhinga Trail is one of the most popular trails in the park. It is only 4 miles from the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center.
This accessible trail is pavement and boardwalk. It is less than a mile round trip, so you can spend 30 minutes here or much longer. We spent about an hour.
The best thing about the Anhinga Trail is the wildlife. There are plenty of viewing opportunities both in and out of the water.
I’ll bet that most visitors to Everglades National Park are longing to see an alligator in the wild. And, it didn’t take us long to spot one on the Anhinga Trail.
We were lucky enough to see 5 alligators on our walk. One of these was quite close to the pavement. So, keep an eye on your kiddos!
The boardwalk part of Anhinga Trail extends over the slough. The water is surprisingly clear. Fish and turtles are easy to see.
This trail also offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy the birds. Even for non-birders, it is hard not to be fascinated by these feathered fellows.
However, not all of the birds are a welcome addition. Rangers warned us that a flock of vultures haunted the parking lot, feasting on the rubber on cars.
Once we arrived, we realized that they weren’t joking! Fortunately, the park service provided tarps. But these guys are resourceful!
I’ve heard people say that Everglades National Park is lackluster. Sure, if all you do is drive through the park, maybe so. But, get out of your car and look closely. This river of grass and the role it plays in South Florida’s ecosystem is fascinating!
