Tip & Tee: Mammoth Site

Travel tees make the BEST souvenirs! In Tip & Tee, I show off an awesome tee I picked up on my trip and share a trip tip for that destination!

If you’re looking for a unique experience in the Black Hills of South Dakota, look no further than the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs

Mammoth Fossils at Mammoth Hot Springs

This treasure trove of fossils was discovered by accident in the 1970s and has been lovingly protected over the decades. As a result of those efforts, this historic site is open to the public. Visitors can view the site and see the progress of the excavation which continues today.

Mammoth Site Trip Tip

Be sure to check out the youth programs which are available during the summer. On our trip, we had the opportunity to participate in the Junior Paleontology Program

Mammoth Site has an indoor mock dig site with fossil replicas “hidden” for kids to find.

Program leaders explained to the kids the process of excavation and provided tools to use. Then they assisted the kids in identifying the fossils they found.

All in all, it was a great hands on experience for the kids and was well worth the time!
