Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your favorite restaurant? I have. So, when I had a few hours of free time before my flight from Atlanta, I jumped at the chance to take the Chick-fil-A Support Center Backstage Tour.

The Chick-fil-A Support Center is only 6 miles from Atlanta’s Hartfield International Airport.

Pro Tip: Don’t get there too early. Guests are only allowed onto the grounds about 20 minutes before their tour. ID is required.
Two tours are available: the Original (1 hour) and the Deluxe (2 hours). While I’d have loved to take the Deluxe tour, I only had time for the Oringal. Tickets should be purchased in advance online.
After passing through security, guests drive about a mile to the main building. The grounds are beautifully wooded and well-manicured, offering ample parking and a tranquil atmosphere for visitors.

Upon passing through building security, you’ll first notice the bright, sunlit atrium at the center of the Support Center. It includes a large floating staircase at one end that is covered with Chick-fil-A red carpet.

After checking in at the tour desk, guests gather for an orientation movie.

Following the film, they break into groups and receive their visitor badges.

We began our tour with a miniature exhibit of the original Dwarf Grill. This small diner was opened in 1946 by Truett Cathy and his brother in Hapeville, GA, and eventually became Chick-fil-A.

The Dwarf Grill exhibit featured a menu, prices, and the sounds of a working grill, providing a nostalgic glimpse into the restaurant’s early days.

In 1964, innovation struck when Cathy had the opportunity to purchase inexpensive chicken breasts originally intended for airline meals but were the wrong size. Experimenting with a recipe, he eventually created a masterpiece: the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich.

The grill exhibit leads into a display area filled with Chick-fil-A memorabilia. It’s fascinating to explore when Chick-fil-A introduced various menu items, including the iconic chicken nugget, which debuted in 1982. And the savory chicken biscuit in 1986.

Be sure to catch a glimpse of the safe that holds the secret recipe while you’re there.

Our next stop on the tour was the top floor, where we visited a display area about Truett Cathy’s life, his faith-driven business philosophy, and his office.

We then moved to Truett’s office, which has remained the same since his death in 2014.

The final part of the tour featured an up-close look at Cathy’s car collection. From a 2007 Ford Taurus to a Batmobile, this eclectic mix of vehicles is sure to make you smile.

Don’t worry. After the tour, guests can stock up on Chick-fil-A merch from the gift shop. Naturally, I couldn’t resist picking up a T-shirt.
Today, the tradition continues. Truett Cathy’s grandson, Andrew, is CEO and carries on his legacy in over 3000 Chick-fil-A’s in the US and Canada.

As self-proclaimed Chick-fil-A superfans in my household, it was fun to uncover the story behind our favorite chicken. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the history, innovation, and values that have made Chick-fil-A a beloved brand. Plus, you might just leave with a deeper appreciation for that delicious chicken sandwich.
